One of the most popular bonded abrasive materials is portable cut-off wheels. These grinding wheels can be found in a number of ways, from machine tool shops to individual garages, and when used properly, they are highly stable. However, accidents have arisen from the misapplication of those wheels.

Helpful Tips on how to use cut-off wheels

Here are some tips on how to use cut-off wheels:

  • Carry on the necessary personal safety equipment (PPE). PPE such as safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield is required. Other personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, a dust mask, and an apron should be worn as required.

  • Investigate the wheels for gaps or damage before using them.

  • Examine the machine's speed and record the maximum speed.

  • On lightweight cut-off wheels, install proper flanges.

  • Place the wheel shield between the driver and the steering wheel as a measure.

  • Run the wheel for one minute in a secure area before you're ready to cut (such as under a bench).

  • Secure the workpiece at both ends until it is ready to be cut.

  • The cut-off wheel can only be used to cut; it cannot be used to grind or deburr.

  • For as long as necessary, holding the cut-off wheel at 90 degrees to the workpiece.

  • Make sure the cut-off wheel isn't damaged.

  • Feed the wheel into the workpiece slowly and steadily.

  • Stop cutting and check for unusual sounds, vibrations, or other irregularities.

  • The spinning wheel should be kept clear of all body parts and clothing.

  • Keep your tools under your fingertips.

  • Wheel guards should be replaced if they have been damaged.

  • Handling and storing cut-off wheels should be done with care.

  • Pay careful attention to the steering wheel's indicators and warnings.

  • Read the manual of the cut-off wheel and, by default, the material being cut before using it.

  • Visit the abrasive company's website for more information on safety.

  • Contact the abrasive manufacturer if you have any safety issues.
