What are cut-off wheels used for?

A cutoff wheel is a powerful tool for cutting heavy objects like ceramic tile, metal, concrete, and stone that is mostly hand-held.

This tool resembles an angle grinder, chop saw, or even a die grinder in appearance, and it excels at cutting rigid materials as compared to other methods.

Many other manual cutting activities necessitate the use of a hand-held grinder with a cutting wheel. Metal fabrication is one of the most main usages for cutting wheels. Cutting a splitting bolt, sizing metal stock for welding, rewelding a cutting weld, and cutting and rounding steel pipe are just a few examples.

For small tasks and more specific cuts, a die grinder with a cutting wheel is required. Cutting wheels or discs with a diameter of 2 inches are used. They're normally made of metal with a diamond-coated edge to shield them from corrosion because they're so thin. Sheets and other thin or small materials can be cut with this disc cutter. For thicker or heavier materials, a large disc cutter is used.

For long straight cuts on a sheet or light cutoff work, a typical buzz saw with a 7 1/4 inch cutting wheel is used. These cutting discs, which are similar to the smaller wheels on an angle grinder, are made of resin bonded abrasive or metal with a diamond-coated finish.

A cutoff saw is used to cut larger items like heavy metal stock, metal studs, and long metal pipes. This tool's cutting discs are normally 10 or 12 inches in diameter and are made of the same materials as the smaller wheels mentioned above. When cutting heavy materials, cutting discs can need lubrication or coolant to avoid overheating. The cutoff saw is used to cut the fabric at a flat, straight 90-degree angle.
